学生の皆さんへ ChatGPTの使用について

昨年来、画像や文章をきわめて高度なレベルで生成する人工知能のシステム、いわゆる生成系AIが大きな話題となっています。とくに昨秋に発表されたChatGPTは、その驚くべき文章生成能力のために、世界各国の教育現場を中心にさまざまな議論を巻き起こしています。日本でもすでに多くの大学がChatGPTの利用に関する指針を発表していますが、足並みがそろっているとはいいがたい状況で、レポート作成などで厳しく使用を制限する大学もあれば、他方でその利用価値を積極的にうけいれる方向を打ち出す大学もあります。
本学としては、いまだ事態が流動的であることを踏まえつつも、学生の皆さんに向けて、以下のような注意喚起をいたします。
ChatGPTは大量のデータをあらかじめ学習した人工知能で、質問を入力すると、人が書いたかのような自然な文章で回答が出力されます。ある単語のあとにはこの単語が、ある文のあとにはこういう文が来る確率が高い、という確率計算をもとに立派に通用する文章が作られます。グーグルなどのこれまでの検索エンジンと違い、質問に対する回答の文字数や文体の調子まで指定可能です。さらに出力された回答に対してあらたな質問や要求を出すこともでき、まさに「チャット」するような感覚で、質の高い文章を作りだせます。
しかし、こうして得られた文章をそのまま課題レポートや論文に転用することは、学生の皆さんの成長にとって致命的なマイナスです。それは「考える」という経験の放棄でしかありません。あるいは「問い」を発見する感覚も鍛えられることはありません。大学時代にもっともたいせつなことは、問題に出会い、それを考え抜くことであり、またそのプロセスを自らの言葉で表現することです。そうした経験の積み重ねこそが、皆さんを未来へと向かわせる原動力になるはずです。文章の自動生成に頼りきりになることは、分かりやすくたとえるならば、料理人を夢見ているのに、スーパーやコンビニで出来合いのお惣菜やお弁当を毎日毎日買うようなものです。就活のエントリーシートに安易に使ったりすると、その文章の無個性ぶりが際立つ結果になって、間違いなく逆効果です。
またChatGPTは、人工「知能」とはいっても自ら「思考」しているわけではもちろんなく、入力された質問によっては、適当につじつまを合わせたような、苦し紛れの文章を作ってきます。絵にかいたような知ったかぶりをすることがあるのです。あるいは、学習に用いられたデータに誤りやバイアスが含まれていることもあります。それらを警戒し見破るためには、利用する側にしっかりとした知的判断力が必要です。
倫理面の問題も指摘しておきましょう。ChatGPTが出力した「文章」は、誰が作ったものでしょうか。すくなくとも、皆さん自身がつくったとは言えず、そうなると、ChatGPTで出力した文章を自分のレポートなどで利用するときは、「ChatGPTによる」と明記すべきでしょう。そうしないと剽窃を疑われ、不正行為とみなされてもいたしかたありません。「文責」という言葉がありますが、文章の責任はだれにあるのか、だれが負うのか、ということを常に意識しましょう。
また情報セキュリティの問題もあります。あなた自身の個人情報や一部の人間しかアクセスできない情報を、うっかりChatGPTに入力してしまうと、それはデータとして保存され、場合によっては、内密にすべき情報が漏洩するという深刻な事態にもなりかねません。この点にも十分に注意を払いましょう。
では結論として、ChatGPTなどの生成系AIを利用するのは、当分のあいだ避けた方がいいということになるのでしょうか。いや、そうではありません。ChatGPTは、使い方次第では、皆さんの知的作業の優れた道具になります。例えば、ある領域の情報収集や整理には、またとない能力を発揮してくれます。生成系ＡＩという「道具」のおかげで生まれた余力を、「思考する人間」としてクリエイティブな作業にふりむける、そうなるのがベストです。
またChatGPTは、質問の精度に比例して回答の精度をあげてきます。つまり、ぼやっとした、未熟な質問を入力しても、あたりさわりのない回答しか出てきません。ChatGPTを優秀な知的パートナーとして活躍させるためには、皆さん自身の知的ポテンシャルをアップさせる必要があるのです。これからもさまざまな生成系ＡＩが登場し、その能力は飛躍的に向上していくはずですが、それらの「道具」を「主人」として使いこなせるように、まず皆さん自身の感性を磨き、思考を厳しく鍛える日々の努力がなによりも大切です。
A message to our students regarding the use of ChatGPT

Since last year, there has been much talk about so-called generative AI, artificial intelligence systems that generate images and text at extremely high levels of sophistication. In particular, the amazing text-generation capability of ChatGPT, released to the public last fall, has sparked various discussions around the world, particularly in the field of education. In Japan, many universities have already announced guidelines regarding the use of ChatGPT, but with very different approaches to that topic; some have placed strict limits on the use of ChatGPT when writing reports, while others are actively promoting its value.
While this situation remains in flux, Meiji Gakuin University has issued the following caution to our students.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence that has pre-learned a vast amount of data. If you give it a question, it will output an answer in sentences so natural they seem to have been written by a human. It produces such well-formed sentences by creating them based on probability calculations regarding which words are most likely to follow a given word, and what kind of sentence is likely to follow a given sentence. Unlike the results from Google and other conventional search engines, the user can specify the length of the response and even its stylistic tone. You can furthermore ask the system follow-up questions and make new requests in response to the output, creating high-quality texts in a format not unlike “chatting.”
However, it would be extremely detrimental to the growth of our students to hand in such a text verbatim for an assigned report or thesis, because doing so abandons the vital process of “thought.” They would furthermore fail to develop the skill of discovering questions. The most important thing you will experience in college is encountering problems, thinking them through, and expressing that process in your own words. The accumulation of such experiences is the driving force that will propel you toward your future. Simply put, relying solely on automatic text generation is like dreaming of becoming a chef, but every day buying ready-made meals at a supermarket or convenience store. Taking such an approach to application essays while seeking post-graduation work would certainly harm your job prospects, as doing so would simply highlight your mediocrity.
While ChatGPT is an artificial “intelligence,” it of course does not think on its own; it simply contrives a plausible-sounding sentence based on the input it receives, without consideration of how forced the results are. At times, it is simply acting as a know-it-all. Also, the data used to train it may contain errors or biases, which the user must be alert for and have sound intellectual judgment to detect.
There are also some ethical issues we would like to point out. Just who created the “text” that ChatGPT outputs? It certainly wasn’t the user, so if you use ChatGPT output as part of something you’ve written, it should be cited; failure to do so would be plagiarism and may be considered a form of cheating. We must take responsibility for what we write, and readers must always be aware of who is responsible and liable for what they read.
Another issue is information security. If you inadvertently enter into ChatGPT personal information or information that should be restricted to only a few people, it will be stored as data, and in some cases, this can lead to a serious compromise of information that should be kept confidential. This is another consideration that we hope you will pay close attention to.
So, in conclusion, does this mean that for the time being, we should avoid all use of ChatGPT and other generative AI systems? No, we do not think so. ChatGPT can, if used properly, be a superb tool for intellectual tasks. For example, it is exceptionally skilled at gathering and organizing information in a given domain. Generative AI systems can thus free us of the time that would have otherwise been spent on such efforts, which as thinking beings we can instead apply to creative tasks. This, we feel, is the best approach to using such systems.
We also note that the accuracy of ChatGPT’s answers increases in proportion to the precision of the questions asked. Specifically, entering a vague, poorly formulated question will result only in a noncommittal answer. If you wish to make ChatGPT a superb intellectual partner, you will need to increase your own intellectual potential. Generative AI systems will continue to appear in various forms, and their capabilities will dramatically improve. The most important steps toward mastering these tools will be to first hone your sensibilities and make daily efforts to rigorously train your own thinking.
